THE AVENGERS: REPRESENTATIONS OF GENDER

1960 was great a great decade for women when it came to equality. This is shown by Emma Peel, a leading female character on mainstream national television. She is one of the main characters however you can see there is still some way until pure equality is visible. An example of this is simple decisions made by Peel seem to be overturned by the leading male character. This is shown when Peel declines a drink for Steed to dismiss what she wants and orders for her anyway. This showed the audience that the male character is in control and the decision maker.

Peel however does come across, well educated, strong and financially stable. This is shown where she is fencing which is generally a sport played by the wealthy educated. However, during this scene, she is wearing tight leather clothing coming across as a sex symbol and something to look at.

There is no lacking in Steeds confidence and it is clear to the audience that Steed is in control. This was still a step forward for women however with displaying Peel with a very respectable job.

Refer to extract 1. Analyse the representation of musicians

The magazine uses a monochrome colour. This choice of colour connotes serious despite her smile contrasting with the feel. Joni Mitchell is making eye contact directly with the camera. She is going against the normal MOJO type cover with it generally being older white males not smiling or looking at the camera. The choice of a female shows difference within the cover.

The language used is very emotive and tries to entice the viewer at all costs. It uses words such as 'born of tragedy' and 'The untold story'. This shows that MOJO have exclusive information about these musicians and generally use action packed words to describe them.

OBSERVER ONLINE: MESSAGES & VALUES Q.9

1.  The major use of newspapers is to offer a sense of knowing
what is going on in the world. The Observer knows that its readers are serious and interested in international affairs. This is evident in hard news articles about..... Brexit
2. The Observer meets its audience's need for a range of cultural, sporting and artistic news. It provides these with...Tabs of Sport music e.g
3. The Observer does not shy away from 'difficult' issues that could make uncomfortable reading, such as... The dificult political atmosphere that revolves around Brexit.
4.  The Observer has sections which are designed to appeal to those who are into music. This is shown when talking about musicans nominated at the Brits.
different types of readers. The Observer reflects the diversity of its readership in articles on...
5.  Newspaper readership can still be used as a symbol of one’s

social identity. The term ‘Guardian reader’ connotes a certain
type of social attitude and The Observer  similarly reinforces
a set of social and political attitudes, and thus identity, in its
representations. For example, Observer  readers like to think
of themselves as open-minded and this is reflected in the
Observer’s practice of allowing both sides of an argument
equally to be put when the newspaper is clearly on one side
of this argument. There is an example of this when talking about politics making sure they're readers understand all areas of the deabte.
6.  The entertainment function of newspapers may take the

form of humour.  It may take the form of diversion into

a celebrity world of ‘glamour’. It may take the form of human
interest stories in which readers are invited to sympathise with
the subjects of the article. Newspapers further offer games,
puzzles, crosswords and the like. At the higher end, sections
such as the New Review in the Observer may offer the pleasure
of extremely well-written think pieces and literature reviews. An example of this is looking at celeberities such as 'Dua Lipa' giving intrest to those in the entertainment industry.
